MY FIRST DAY AT THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Physiotherapy is science. According to the different existing definitions, I present to you what in my opinion encompasses the concept:

“Physiotherapy is a service that can only and exclusively be performed by a health professional with a Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy.. Addresses issues related to movement and function of the musculoskeletal system. For this, It uses manual and instrumental means to restore physical well-being., psychological and social. It is based on science and daily clinical practice, where complete and functional movement is the basis of being healthy. Furthermore, it includesand evaluation processes, diagnosis, treatment planning and evaluation.

These processes that the definition talks about, They are the ones that make the difference, that is to say, Your first day at the physiotherapist should not be summarized in:

Physio: – Where does it hurt?
Patient: – My entire back is full of contractures.
Physio: – So take off your shirt and lie face down..

Well no. That's not the way to act. The first thing to do is an interview in which data on the problem will be collected., physios call it “anamnesis”, In it they will investigate your problem wanting to know things like when, where and how it started, if you join us in the morning, during the day or if he sleeps with us at night.

You will also want to know if and how it affects us at work or in any other daily activity.. all this, in addition to helping him understand your problem, it makes you think and understand it too, being able also, now that you are aware, check improvements in the treatment applied to you.

In this talk, and usually last, will ask you about your medical history, any disease may be relevant, operation, trauma and weight loss, that could be related to problems that are beyond their competence and that require referral to other specialists.

After this conversation, explores that area where you have decided that the cause of the problem can be found. He or she will be interested in whether you have pain at that moment and in knowing its intensity, asking you to rate it 1 al 10, He will then observe your posture to start the action.

It's time to make moves, will take measurements to see if the movements related to your problem cause limitation and/or if they cause symptoms, in addition to carefully observing how you do them. all this, obviously, in an amount and intensity that does not irritate your problem. This is called a “physical exam.”.

The time has come for the physiotherapist to get it right and confirm his hypothesis, He will inform you of the treatment that he believes is most appropriate for the cause of your problem and will get to work..

In my opinion, This has to be a process in which small treatments are applied on a trial basis and those aspects related to the movements previously explored are reevaluated., This means seeing the effectiveness of what is being done to you and thus continuing or changing treatment., In this way we avoid a possible waste of time with things that in your particular case do not benefit you..

Before finishing treatment, The physio must carry out a reevaluation in order to verify its effectiveness. To do this, it will use all those movements that you performed incompletely or with pain.. Of course, Also know what happened to that pain with which you came to the consultation, you will be asked to value it again 1 al 10. You should notice improvement with respect to this, ultimately find yourself better, something that has been controlled during the treatment with the revaluation of the techniques, it must be possible.

To conclude, I would like to highlight the beginning of the article: “Physiotherapy is a science”. How do you see, We have gone through a process in which the characteristics of the problem have been analyzed, The affected structures have been identified and how they influence the movement or development of our activities., creating this hypothesis that with the exposed treatment procedure must be confirmed, in order to act in the most faithful way to the existing scientific evidence, to ensure a good result.

All the best

See you at the physio
