The purpose of the following dissertation is to deal with the truth or lie part, at least in my opinion, about some myths from the world of wine.
1- Are “Reserva” wines always the best??
The word “reserve” is not related to quality but to the time that a wine has been in a barrel.. Although there are wines with the reserve category of very good quality, there are others of quite poor quality. Nowadays, the quality of the grapes and good work in the winery by the winemaker are much more important., that labels such as breeding or reserve.
2 – The wines, Do they improve with time in the bottle?
Very related to the previous myth, this is false, Only some wines improve over time and only up to a certain time. And factors such as the quality of the grapes influence this., the time that the wine has previously remained in the barrel and above all the good conservation of this bottle. Hence, In places like Seville, it is essential to keep the wine in refrigerated wine cellars or in fairly cool places such as a basement..
3 – The best quality wines in Spain are those made from Tempranillo grapes from Rioja or Ribera del Duero..
The truth is that the Tempranillo grape produces great wines and that great elaborations are made in La Rioja and Ribera del Duero., but the opposite is also true. Nowadays, generalizing in the world of wine is usually wrong., since very good quality wines are obtained made from different types of grapes and throughout almost the entire Spanish geography.. I invite you to discover wines from other grapes and other production areas (Take as an example the new quality Andalusian reds.).
4-Only wines with D.O.. they are quality?
A wine that belongs to a Designation of Origin (D.O.) It means that you have followed the parameters set by your regulatory council, that is to say, that respects the origin of the place where the wine is made and is subject to its regulations. In fact there are wines with a D.O label.. which are quite poor quality, and the opposite, wines made outside of D.O.. that have very good quality. There are many wineries that make their wines outside the D.O.. to be able to experiment with other varieties and not subject their wines to aging in barrels for a period of time that is not necessary and that in many cases does not contribute anything to them..
5 – The expensive wines, are they the best?
The price of wine is the result of the production cost, production, distribution and quality; but we must also take into account other factors such as exclusivity, the design, the brand and the support of a renowned winemaker. Therefore, The myth that expensive wines are the best is not entirely true since the increase in the price of a wine is sometimes due to other reasons that are not related to its quality.. In the range between 5 y 12 € you can find wines of the highest quality, which in many cases can be much better than others that are much more expensive. Although of course, There are incredible expensive wines…
6- Cork yes or no?
Wine producers spend time and resources to locate and use corks in bottling that do not produce failures or add undesirable flavors to the wine.. Everyone knows that cork can provide benefits to wine., but a bad cork can be the cause of giving it a bad taste. Until recently there were no possible alternatives, but lately, and with the emergence of synthetic and screw caps, many wineries are betting on the use of the latter, obtaining excellent results.
The reality is that a synthetic cork or a screw cap is better than a bad cork.. Yes indeed, for quality wines with long aging periods, quality cork is essential.
7 – Does wine make you fat and affect your health??
Far from making you fat, wine contains more than a thousand substances that are favorable for health.. Based on a study carried out in relation to the moderate consumption of red wine, It was concluded that mortality caused by heart disease was inversely proportional to moderate wine consumption, that is to say, Heart ailments decrease in countries with the highest wine consumption.
However, It must be taken into account that doctors recommend moderate alcohol consumption, Hence it is advisable to have a glass of red wine with food and not abuse it., since resveratrol is found specifically in red wine, which together with other antioxidants are beneficial for the health of the heart and the body in general. Red wine is also famous for lowering cholesterol and preventing blood clots., In addition to being attributed anti-cancer properties and being an ally to delay aging and prevent diseases such as Alzheimer's..
8- Having a glass of wine is like going to the gym.
This is a recent myth, based on research published a few months ago in The FASEB Journal, which suggests that resveratrol from grapes reduces the negative consequences of a sedentary life. This substance present in red, in nuts and grapes, improve heart functions, muscles and bones, just like when you go to the gym.
